Fernandes visits Kutch to review border security

E-Mail this report to a friend

Defence Minister George Fernandes arrived in Gujarat this morning and went on a tour of Kutch district, bordering Pakistan.

According to official sources, Fernandes, who landed at Ahmedabad early this morning, was joined by Gujarat minister of state for home and border security Haren Pandya, besides senior civil, police and defence officials when he left for Bhuj, the district headquarters of Kutch.

The defence minister was scheduled to visit the border areas to review security arrangements along the Kutch border with Pakistan in view of the Kargil conflict.

Meanwhile, a report from Jamnagar said as part of the rehearsal for civil defence preparedness, air raid sirens will be sounded and total blackout drill will be conducted in and around Jamnagar city for 30 minutes on June 25.

District magistrate and civil defence controller Girish Chandra Murmu asked drivers of all types of vehicles to switch off their lights and to stop their vehicles wherever they are on Friday, as soon as air raid warning sirens were blown.

They should move only when the ''all-clear'' signal was sounded through a straight, single-pitch siren, a press release said.
