Bus of friendship reaches Bangladesh

E-Mail this report to a friend The inaugural pair of the West Bengal Surface Transport Corporation buses, carrying the first lot of passengers to Bangladesh, was ceremonially flagged off at the international check post at Petrapol today.

After flagging off the buses with seventy passengers, including two West Bengal ministers, Nitish Kumar rode in 'Souhardya' -- the bus of friendship -- and entered the neighbouring country.

Bangladesh's Communication Minister Janab Anwar Hussain Manjur, accompanied by three MPs received the buses at the entry point at Benapol in Bangladesh. Later, Kumar was driven to 'Sarsha' helipad from where he was flown to Dhaka by a Bangladesh copter.

Talking to reporters in at the Zia International Airport in Dhaka, Nitish Kumar said that India and Bangladesh plan to start a regular passenger train between the two countries soon.

He said India would fully restore the Bengaon-Petrapole rail route by June 30. ''We are ready to launch the train service from July 1 but some work is yet to be completed by the Bangladesh side,'' he said.

The railway minister said India was prepared to assist Bangladesh in whatever manner possible so that the work on the rail line could be completed at the earliest.
