Mukhtar Ahmad in Srinagar

In a serious setback to the National Conference in North Kashmir, militants shot at and killed the party zonal vice president advocate Aziz Malik at Galoora Handwara in Kupwara district late last night.

Police sources said that a group of heavily armed militants entered the house of Malik and after disarming his bodyguard opened fire on him. Malik died on the spot while his guard who also received bullet injuries was shifted to a hospital.

Senior police and security forces officers rushed to the spot immediately and the area was cordoned off. However, the militants managed to escape under the cover of darkness.

Recently, militants have intensified attacks on ruling party leaders. Scores of them have already been killed in the ongoing militancy.
