Faleiro to seek confidence vote on June 14Goa Chief Minister Luizinho Faleiro will seek a vote of confidence on June 14 at a specially called session of the ninth state assembly, which was constituted on June 9. State Governor J F R Jacob has directed Faleiro to prove his majority within a period of 21 days from the date he assumed office. The Congress has a strength of 21 in the 40-member house. Two members of the United Goans Democratic Party have assured issue-based support to the new government. So also, one of the two members of the Goa Rajiv Congress, Francis D' Souza. The leader of of the Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party's legislative group, comprising four members, Ramakant Khalap has also decided to support the Faleiro government on crucial issues. The Congress party chose former chief minister Pratapsingh Rane to be the speaker of the house, given his long stint as chief minister for over 13 years. Haji Shaikh Hassan Haroon, Congress Member of Legislative Assembly from Marmagao will be the protem speaker. Haroon is a former speaker. An independent MLA from Poiguinium, Isidore Ferandes has also extended his support to the Faleiro government which is expected to have a smooth sailing in the house. UNI |
