US Senate okays lifting of sanctionsC K Arora in Washington The United States Senate has approved an amendment suspending for five years the sanctions that the Bill Clinton administration had imposed on India and Pakistan in protest against their nuclear tests last year. The amendment, approved on Tuesday, however, does not repeal the US ban on military, missile and nuclear technology sales. It gives the president better tools to deal with any military build-up in the two countries. It will allow sales of agriculture products as well as other products, including aircraft. The measure, which stood in the name of senators Sam Brown Back and Pat Roberts, was attached to the defence appropriations bill. The administration currently has the authority to waive for a year some of the economic sanctions on India and Pakistan. UNI
