227 Pak army regulars killed, says official

The Indian Air Force fighter planes carried out attacks this morning on the positions held by Pakistan army regulars and mercenaries in the Kargil sector as troops continued to put pressure on them with intense artillery and mortar shelling.

Air strikes are being conducted mainly in the Drass sector and Mushkoh valley. Storage facilities and bunkers of the intruders are being attacked to soften the target for the infantry.

The posts held by the infiltrators were being heavily shelled in Turtuk, Batalik and other areas of the Kargil sector.

An Indian Army spokesperson said so far 227 Pakistani army regulars have been killed in the operation since May 8. It was still collecting information with regard to the number of Mujahideen mercenaries who have died.

Besides attacking the positions, a vigil was being kept at other points following attempts to push in arms into Indian territory.

The Pakistan army continued unprovoked firing from across the border. They were also resorting to artillery shelling in the Kanzalwan and Karen sectors and firing mortars in Punch and Naoshera.

On the Indian side, the casualties have been 63 killed, 217 wounded and 14 missing. The army had been making attempts to find out if any of the 14 missing was taken captive by Pakistan.
