Jethmalani to take over as law minister

E-Mail this report to a friend

Eminent lawyer Ram Jethmalani will shed the urban development ministry and take over as law minister in a minor shuffle of the Union cabinet undertaken by Prime Minister A B Vajpayee.

This was confirmed by Jethamalani today in reply to a question at a press conference that there were strong rumours that he was being replaced by Communication Minister Jagmohan.

Jethamalani said the rumours were no longer rumours. These turned out to be true, he had been informed about it. But he was yet to receive the presidential notification in this regard.

He had called the press conference to announce the setting up of speedy justice panel for disposal of pending and impending cases regarding housing disputes.

Asked how he was feeling about being shifted to some other ministry, Jethamalani said this was the change he had been longing for so long. ''I am happy that Jagmohan, who had earlier been attached to some departments of this ministry, is taking over. I also hope that some of the steps taken by his ministry would be carried further by his successor.''
