Kerala faces threat of floods

E-Mail this report to a friend

Kerala's major rivers rose alarmingly, forcing evacuation of about 120 families and causing wall collapses and damage to crops as the south-west monsoon unleashed its fury on the southern parts of the state for the second day today.

Official sources said one more relief camp was opened at Venganoor in Thiruvananthapuram district to accommodate 17 families.

Rivers in the region were already flowing above the danger mark.

The sources said at least 10 houses were damaged in Thiruvananthapuram. But no one was injured. Several houses at Kalady, Vallakadavu, Kamaleswaram, Jagathy and other areas were submerged in flood waters.

The weather office said the monsoon further intensified today with almost all parts of the state receiving rain. Heavy to very heavy rain is likely in most parts of Kerala in the next two days.

Fishermen have been advised against venturing into the sea off the southern coast and Lakshadweep as winds with a speed of 55-60 kilometres per hour were likely.

Konni received the maximum rainfall of 16 centimetres during the past 24 hours.
