States told to maintain utmost vigilUnion Home Secretary Kamal Pande yesterday emphasised the urgent need for utmost vigil throughout the country to ensure that internal security is strengthened in every possible manner in view of the recent developments in the Kargil sector. Pande was addressing a meeting of home secretaries and director generals of police of states and union territories convened to take stock of the overall situation and to sensitise the states on the need to gear up their administrative machinery to tackle any developments that may arise. Pande directed the officials to tackle swiftly and firmly any attempt at inciting communal passions or caste tensions. Similarly, vital installations and sensitive establishments should be suitably guarded, he told them. He called for a close watch on the actions and movements of known as well as suspected Pakistani agents and their sympathisers. The home secretary asked the states to particularly sensitise district magistrates and district superintendents of police. The border states were told to be particularly careful and take all possible precautions to prevent any adverse fall out of the present developments. UNI
