Vajpayee to commission INS Mysore on Wednesday

E-Mail this report to a friend

INS Mysore, one of the most sophisticated warships in the world, is to be commissioned by Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee on Wednesday.

It is yet another gift to the nation by the state-owned Mazagon Dock Ltd.

This is the second destroyer-class ship which sails out from the Mazagon Dock in just a span of two years, the first being INS Delhi, which was commissioned on November 15, 1997.

The two-century-old yard situated in south Bombay has delivered to the Indian Navy six Leander-class frigates, three Godavari-class frigates, two missile corvettes, three missile boats, two submarines and a cadet ship. Work is also in progress for yet another destroyer-class ship, INS Bombay.

Though there have been delays due to financial constraints, the Mazagon Dock Ltd has successfully completed all tasks assigned to it.

Over the decades the yard has earned a reputation for quality work. After the takeover of the yard by the government in 1960, it became a hub of ship-building activity.

Between 1965 and 1971, the yard underwent a massive expansion and modernisation programme.
