TULF leader assassinated by LTTE suicide bomber

Tamil United Liberation Front parliamentarian Neelam Thiruchelvam was killed by a Liberation Tiger of Tamil Eelam suicide bomber this morning.

The Tamil lawmaker was killed when the suicide bomber attacked his car in Colombo, officials at the police emergency department said.

They said Thiruchelvam's two bodyguards were wounded in the attack.

Thiruchelvam, an expert in constitutional law, was largely seen as a moderate Tamil politician and headed the Colombo-based International Centre for Ethnic Studies.

Details were still sketchy and the police had barricaded the area near the fashionable Rosmead Place area of the Sri Lankan capital.
