Curfew in Ahmedabad's walled city relaxed for six hours

Curfew was relaxed in the walled city areas of Ahmedabad under the Shahpur and Karanj police stations for six hours from 0800 hours today. Only women were allowed outside so as to enable them to purchase essential commodities. No major incident was reported since yesterday.

According to city police control room sources, an incident of stone-throwing was reported last evening in the Juhapura area in which about half-a-dozen people were injured. Barring this, no other incident was reported from any other place.

So far, seven persons have lost their lives, six of them due to stabbing, in the week-long sporadic violence in the walled city areas.

Curfew had been imposed on July 20 in the Dariapur and Kalupur areas following a minor incident. After lifting of curfew on July 23, fresh violence erupted in Mirzapur, Shahpur and Gomtipur areas, leading to the clamping of curfew on July 27 evening in all these places. In all, 18 cases of stabbing have been reported in the walled city since July 20.
