Chautala wins trust vote

E-Mail this report to a friend

Haryana Chief Minister Om Parkash Chautala has won the confidence vote in the state assembly by 54 to 32 votes.

The confidence motion, moved by the chief minister, was put to vote by Deputy Speaker Faqir Chand Aggarwal after a seven-hour stormy debate.

Aggarwal presided over the proceedings of the house following the resignation of Speaker Chhattar Singh Chauhan earlier in the day before the house assembled. The ruling coalition had issued a notice for his removal.

The one-sentence trust motion said, ''The house reposes its confidence in the chief minister enjoying the support of the majority of its members.''

Fifty-four members belonging to the Indian National Lok Dal, the Bharatiya Janata Party, the breakaway Haryana Vikas Party-Democratic and independents supported the motion, while 32 members belonging to the Haryana Vikas Party, the Congress and independents opposed the motion.

Former chief minister and Haryana Vikas legislature party leader Bansi Lal was absent throughout the proceedings.
