Torrential rains continue, death toll touches 293Four people were feared drowned in the swollen Kempahole river at Sakleshpur, in Hassan district of Karnataka, yesterday. Police said today that the dead included two software engineers and a second year engineering student. The youths had gone on a dinghy in the river, which was in spate. Several parts of Kerala continued to receive heavy rainfall as the toll rose to 76 in the state with two more deaths in the past 48 hours. Revenue control room said Kannur and Kasargod reported one death each. Continuing floods in Bihar have so far claimed 135 lives and affected nearly four million people in 13 districts of the worst-hit north Bihar. About 372,000 hectares of land has been inundated. A man and his son were killed by lighting in Jairamnagar village of Bidayun district last evening. One woman was injured in the incident. In Assam, vast areas have been submerged in eleven districts of the Brahmaputra valley. According to the Central Water Commission, though the water level was receding, rivers were still flowing above the danger mark at some points. It was expected to recede further in the next twelve hours. Twelve deaths in monsoon-related incidents have been reported in the state.
