E-Mail this report to a friend

Governor Mahabir Prasad today invited Indian National Lok Dal chief Om Parkash Chautala to form the new government in Haryana.

Earlier in the day Chautala, accompanied by legislators belonging to his party, the Bharatiya Janata Party, breakaway Haryana Vikas Party-Democratic and independents, drove in a motorcade to Raj Bhavan in Chandigarh and paraded 55 MLAs before the governor in support of his claim to form the new government.

The effective strength of the 90-member Haryana state assembly currently is 87.

Chautala emerged as a consensus candidate at a joint meeting of legislators of the three parties and the independents this morning.
