Floods hit 11 Assam districtsThe flood situation in Assam remained critical today with the turbulent Brahmaputra and its major tributaries flowing above the red mark at different places, submerging fresh areas in various districts, an official report said. The Brahmaputra had caused heavy erosion at Bihubari, Kacharigaon, Nathgaon and Hollowkanda in Marigaon district. Altogether 11 districts had been affected by the floods, the worst-hit being Dhemaji district, where more than 200 villages had been submerged. The district remained cut off from the rest of the state by road and rail. Hundreds of people had taken shelter on roads and embankments. The report further said nearly 400,000 people had been affected and extensive damage caused to property and standing crops. The extent of damage was yet to be assessed as most of the affected areas remained inaccessible, the report stated. UNI
