US President Bill Clinton and Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee have saluted each other for 'their respective laudatory roles' in defusing the Kargil crisis.

During his telephone talk with the Indian leader yesterday, Clinton ''saluted Prime Minister Vajpayee and India for exercising great restraint during this latest situation''.

Vajpayee, on his part, ''saluted the president for his efforts to help defuse the situation''. He also expressed his condolences to the president and the American people on the plane accident of John F Kennedy Jr.

National Security Council spokesman Colonel P J Crowley who briefed the media on Clinton-Vajpayee telephone talk, said the president called the PM to say ''that we are pleased to see that the Line of Control'' between India and Pakistan ''had been largely restored''.

He said Clinton ''again encouraged the prime minister to find a way to move ahead with bilateral dialogue on restoring the Lahore process as the best way for both countries (India and Pakistan) to move forward''.
