Pondicherry govt may fall

E-Mail this report to a friend

The fate of the three-year-old Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam-led government in the Union territory of Pondicherry is hanging in the balance following the decision of the Tamil Maanila Congress, a partner in the ruling coalition, to float a third front to fight the coming Lok Sabha elections.

Though TMC president G K Moopanar has been reluctant to pull down the Janakiraman government even after snapping ties with the DMK, political observers feel that the days of the government were numbered as both the parties would be forced to take a different stand in view of the elections.

The Communist Party of India, which has two members in the government, is expected to announce its decision to pull out, in the executive committee meeting to be held in a couple of days. The CPI has aligned with the AIADMK for the Lok Sabha elections.

However, as long as the DMK enjoys the support of the TMC, there is no threat to the ministry.

TMC Pondicherry unit president and Home Minister P Kannan said today that the party would soon have to take a decision with regard to continuing in the government.
