China claims to have developed neutron bomb

China announced today that it has the technology to make neutron bombs, but gave scanty details.

"China officially announced here [in Beijing] today that it has already mastered the neutron bomb design technology," the official Xinhua news agency said in a one-paragraph report.

The three-line report gave no clue as to when China developed the neutron bomb or whether it has begun mass production of the weapon or deployed any.

A United States congressional report had said in May that China had acquired US secrets about seven high-end nuclear weapons and the neutron bomb through 20 years of espionage in American defence laboratories.

China has denied vehemently stealing US nuclear secrets, saying its scientists are fully capable of developing advanced weaponry.
