Assembly poll schedule for 3 states announced

Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Sikkim will have simultaneous Lok Sabha and assembly elections, the Election Commission has announced.

Chief Election Commissioner M S Gill said a decision to this effect was taken as the tenures of the state assemblies are to end shortly.

The tenure of the 224-member Karnataka legislative assembly is ending on December 25, 1999, followed by the 32-member Sikkim assembly on December 28 and the 294-member Andhra Pradesh assembly on January 10, 2000.

Elections to the assembly constituencies will follow the same schedule as for the parliamentary constituencies of which they are a part. Thus, elections will be held in 120 constituencies of Karnataka on September 4 and 104 constituencies on September 11.

The Andhra Pradesh assembly poll will be held in three phases on September 4 (91 constituencies), September 11 (105) and September 17 (98).

All the 32 assembly constituencies of Sikkim will go to the polls on October 1.

The Commission has also decided to forward its recommendation to the governors of the three states to issue the poll notification.

Dr Gill said that there were a few casual vacancies in some other legislative assemblies and the Commission has decided in principle to hold bye-elections to these constituencies with the same schedule as for the corresponding parliamentary constituencies. The Commission will separately notify the list of these assembly constituencies.

Karnataka

Phase I

Polling on September 4 Issue of notification: August 11 Last date for filing nominations: August 18 Scrutiny of nominations: August 19 Last date for withdrawal of nominations: August 21 Counting of votes: October 5

Phase II

Polling on September 11 Issue of notification: August 17 Last date for filing nominations: August 24 Scrutiny: August 25 Last date for withdrawal of nominations: August 27 Counting: October 5

Andhra Pradesh

Phase I

Polling on September 4 Issue of notification: August 11 Last date for filing nominations: August 18 Scrutiny: August 19 Last date for withdrawal of nominations: August 21 Counting: October 5

Phase II

Polling on September 11 Issue of notification: August 17 Last date for filing nominations: August 24 Scrutiny: August 25 Last date for withdrawal of nominations: August 27 Counting: October 5.

Phase III

Polling on September 17 Issue of notification: August 21 Last date for filing nominations: August 28 Scrutiny: August 30 Last date for withdrawal of nominations: September 1 Counting: October 5

Sikkim

Issue of notification: September 7 Last date for filing nominations: September 14 Scrutiny: September 15 Last date for withdrawal of nominations: September 17 Counting: October 5.
