India's Human Development Index ranking climbs 6 rungsGurdip Singh in New Delhi India, which was today ranked 132 out of 174 nations on the Human Development Index, has moved up and entered the 'medium development category' of nations. The 1999 Human Development Report released in New Delhi and published by the United Nations Development Programme, shows that India moved six notches up from the 138th position it held in 1997. The HDI measures the overall achievements of a country in terms of adult literacy, life expectancy, education and per capita income. Countries are divided into three ranks of human development -- high, medium and low. Last year's report had ranked India in the category of low human development. The report also ranks countries on the gender-related development index, gender empowerment index and human poverty index. UNI |
