Bodies of Lt Verma, 5 others brought to Chandigarh

The bodies of Lieutenant Amit Verma and five other soldiers, who died during the Kargil operations, were brought to Chandigarh this morning from Turtok in Batalik sub-sector of Jammu and Kashmir.

The five soldiers who lost their lives include Havildars Karam Singh and Suresh Chauwhan, Naik K Rampal and Sepoys Raman Kumar and Prem Lal of the Ninth Mahar regiment.

The martyrs were given full military honours at the airport.

Wreaths were laid on behalf of Punjab governor and administrator of Chandigarh, Lieutenant General (retd) B K N Chhibber, chief ministers of Punjab and Haryana and the chief of army staff and the air chief marshal.

The bodies were later handed over to the relatives of the soldiers and taken to their respective native places.

Lt Verma hailed from Bahrai village of Jhajjar district of Haryana, Hav Karam Singh from Chanan Rari village of Hoshiarpur district (Punjab), Hav Suresh Chauwhan from village Kaloli in Sangli district (Maharashtra), Naik K Rampal from village Sololia in Rohtak district (Haryana), Sepoy Raman Kumar from village in Alaniya district in Jammu and Sepoy Prem Lal from village Kho in Aligarh district (Uttar Pradesh).
