Assam denies 600 died due to starvation in flood-hit areas

E-Mail this report to a friend

The Assam government has denied a news report that about 600 people died due to starvation in flood-ravaged Dhemaji district of the state.

An official statement said, ''Though Dhemaji and Lakhimpur districts were badly affected in last year's unprecedented flood along with some other districts, no starvation death has been reported.''

The report had stated that more than ''600 people died of malnutrition, lack of medical treatment and starvation during the past three months ''.

The statement said the administration of all the flood- affected districts had been instructed to provide relief whenever the situation demanded.

The state government has already sanctioned more than Rs 500 million for providing relief, rehabilitation and to repair damages caused by last year's flood.
