As many as 170 shrines were gutted or dismantled during nine years of militancy in Jammu and Kashmir.

Minister of State for Home Mushtaq Lone told the Jammu and Kashmir legislative assembly today that ''during the nine years of militancy in the state, a total of 170 religious shrines were damaged. They include 130 temples, 35 mosques, two gurdwaras and three other shrines.''

The minister was replying to a written question by Bali Bhagat during the question hour.

Asked whether steps were being taken to renovate all such religious places, the minister informed the house that the renovations were being carried out by the management of the shrines concerned. The government only placed funds at their disposal for carrying out such renovations, he said.
