E-Mail this report to a friend

In a bid to counter militancy, about 6,000 special police officers, including 85 women, have been appointed in Rajouri, Doda and Udhampur districts of Jammu and Kashmir.

Minister of State for Home Mushtaq Ahmad Lone told the legislative assembly yesterday that 3,400 SPOs have been appointed in Doda, 895 in Rajouri and 800 in Udhampur districts.

About 1800 SPOs, including women, have been attached to security forces in Doda district. No PSOs have been attached to security forces in Udhampur and Rajouri districts.

Replying to Sheikh Abdul Rehman, the minister said the SPOs were being paid Rs 1,500 as monthly stipend. However, some SPOs could not be given salary for the last few months as the budgetary allocation for the posts was not available.

He assured the house that the revised sanction of SPOs' salary has been fixed and there should now be no difficulty in paying their salaries.
