At least three security personnel were killed and 12 others injured when their vehicle was blown up after militants detonated a powerful improvised explosive device at Anantnag in south Kashmir last evening.

Elsewhere in the valley, a father-son duo and four militants were among eight people killed while two militants surrendered during the past 24 hours.

The blast at Anantnag took place only few hours after Maj Gen R K Kaushal claimed during a press conference in Srinagar that the situation in south Kashmir had improved after the troops killed 60 militants during the past few months.

An official spokesman said militants detonated an improvised explosive device near a school on the main road at Anantnag last evening when a security force vehicle crossed that area.

He said at least three security personnel were killed on the spot and 12 injured, some of them critically, as the vehicle was blown up. A civilian was also injured in the incident.
