E-Mail this report to a friend

The Rajya Sabha was adjourned for the day today as the Opposition members, barring the Congress, stalled the proceedings of the question hour, demanding the resignation of the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government for 'the misuse of Article 356 in Bihar'.

The House was thrown into turmoil for about 15 minutes forcing Chairman Krishan Kant to adjourn it for the day.

The Lok Sabha too was adjourned till 1400 hours shortly after the question hour when the Rashtriya Loktantrik Morcha members rushed to the well of the House and started shouting slogans demanding restoration of the Rashtriya Janata Dal government in Bihar.

After the question hour, Speaker G M C Balayogi called several ministers to table the papers mentioned against their names, following which the RLM members rushed to the well shouting slogans.

Members of the Indian National Lok Dal also rushed to the well and started demanding roll-back in prices of wheat, rice and urea.

The Speaker appealed to the members to maintain calm as he was to make an announcement. But the agitated members were in no mood to relent.

As the slogan-shouting persisted, the Speaker adjourned the House till 1400 hours.

Earlier, when the House assembled, the question hour was delayed following heated exchanges between the supporters of RJD chief Laloo Prasad Yadav and Samajawadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav on the one side and Bharatiya Janata Party members on the other over the imposition of President's rule in Bihar.
