E-Mail this report to a friend

A special task force of the Tamil Nadu police today nabbed three key aides of sandalwood smuggler Veerappan in the Sathyamangalam forest area after intelligence operatives infiltrated the gang.

Police sources said a courageous prisoner was released to join the Veerappan gang and help track the desperado.

The move proved partially successful with the arrest of three Veerappan aides, Jayaprakash alias Mathiah alias Siva, Rasu and Mahalingam were nabbed by the police.

The sources said it was expected that Veerappan himself would be nabbed anytime now. Those arrested were also involved in the attack on the Vellithiruppur police station where, a few months ago, the gang decamped with weapons after assaulting a sub-inspector and a constable, the sources added.
