Bhutto warns of Pak disintegration if economy slides further

E-Mail this report to a friend

If the government does not act fast to revive the economy, Pakistan would go to pieces despite a huge army and atomic weapons, former Pakistani premier Benazir Bhutto has warned.

Addressing a seminar on Zulfiqar Bhutto organised by the Pakistan Peoples Party federal council on Monday in Lahore, Bhutto said today Pakistan cannot survive without a loan from the IMF.

She said, "We cannot advance with nuclear weapons." The former Soviet Union, she pointed out, had thousands of nuclear bombs but it broke up and today Russians are looking for charity.

On the one hand Pakistan takes pride in calling itself the seventh nuclear power of the world, while on the other hand people in the country are committing suicide due to hunger, she said.

If Pakistan crumbled, "every country in the sub-continent would have to face serious consequences," Bhutto warned and added, "The resolution of Kashmir issue is a must for a bright future of the sub-continent."
