'Hindu identity has been hijacked by these political parties'
E-mail from readers the world over
Date: Sat, 30 Jan 1999 15:57:49 -0500 Dear Vaihayasi, It is about time someone spoke up without indulging in intellectual polemics but spoke from the heart about the human cost in lack of faith, and loss of country and that's what you have done. I am sure there are many who can relate. I am always proud to tell Americans that Hinduism is the only non-proselytising faith in the world -- this is its strength and attraction for me. How is it that neither of the political parties espousing the cause of Hinduism to the exclusion of other faiths, realise that they are diminishing the fountainhead, the source of their faith? Sometimes I also feel that the Hindu identity has been hijacked by these political parties. Who are they, in free India, to tell us what or who a Hindu is when 5,000 years of history has not been able to answer that question? Regards and congratulations again for speaking out. Radhika Yeddanapudi
Date: Sun, 07 Feb 1999 15:22:37 -0800 How come the Muslim leaders of India could not find fault with Britain that spent its taxpayer's money to protect Rushdie all these years. They could have asked the British government to put him to death themselves! On what basis can the Indian government deny a visa to Rushdie, now that the Iranian government itself has lifted its hands off the issue? Srinivas Murthy
Date: Mon, 08 Feb 1999 07:12:51 +0530 I agree with Madan Lal Khurana that the Sangh Parivar should become more responsible. Khurana is the undisputed leader of Delhi and he always led from the front. He has really done considerable work for Delhi and the law and order during his chief ministership was definitely better. He is quite a vocal leader and like all Punjabis, sometimes speaks before realising its repercussions. He should be more discreet. We all wish him the best in life as he is honest, sincere and straightforward. Vinay Kumar Wadhawan
Date: Fri, 29 Jan 1999 18:37:21 -0800 (PST) As I read the Interview with Surendra Jain, I was surprised to see how people can still support such a barbarous act of burning a man and his two little boys alive. Shame on you, Surendra Jain. Stop for a while and think if your own spouse or son or daughter was burnt to death this way, how do you feel? How can you come out unashamedly and say that Mr Stains is doing some conversion and that's why he was burned to death? You Hindu fanatics should see what you are doing. Just because the government is blindly supporting your activities, you should not do these barbarous acts. There is nothing wrong in preaching, practising your faith. Nobody does conversions forcibly. The reason why all these atrocities are increasing is because tribals and Dalits are getting enlightened and are aware of equality and justice, and you are losing your authority over them. So for your selfish purposes, you still want them to remain in the darkness. When the police and the villagers and eye witnesses clearly saying that it was done by Bajrang Dal, the home minister, without any proof, gives them a clean chit. Where is the justice and where is the freedom of religion? It is my challenge to you to think about the incident of the murder of Mr Stains and his two sons, and think honestly by what means can you justify these atrocities. Sudhakar
Date: Saturday, February 06, 1999 10:38 PM Great piece of work. Hope this will continue. For those of us who do not have the time to constantly keep following the match on the net, and can't see it on television in USA -- this provides a great way to catch up. The commentary being not too short nor too long and dreary, is the ideal combination of wit, perspective and most importantly information. Hoping to read many more such commentaries. Gautam
Date: Sunday, January 31, 1999 9:55 PM It is shocking to read obscenities. When it is directed against an individual, it is the last straw. The person who has posted the obscene note has used the virtual Internet cloud cover to protect his identity. That is cowardice of the lowest kind. If I could get my hands on this guy I will rip his guts out. Prem, on behalf of all decent people who like cricket and like your columns, please accept my sincere apologies. Your decision to stop the chat frame is painful for people like myself. I guess the decision is wise. Please keep up the good work. Somesh Jaiswal
Date: Sunday, January 31, 1999 10:15 PM I usually follow the live commentary on Rediff. I just wanted to say it's good you are getting rid of the chat. There are idiots out there who supposedly show love for the game but can't mind their manners. I enjoyed the chatting part. You know asking questions about the pitch conditions or whether the ball is turning... after all it's only on the net where we can have this kind of interaction. Yet, given the circumstances, I fully support your decision. But while you should not pay any attention to these idiots, you should also not forget how much we all appreciate your work and enjoy your perceptive commentary and definitely the best articles. I am sad that India lost today. Okay, devastated after Sachin's effort to see us through but I see a hero even in the mist of failure. Sachin gave a fight. That's why he is so special! Cheers, catch you on the next game. This one we will win! And to add icing to the cake, we will also bag the Asian Cup. I am always optimistic. Zameer
Date: Mon, 25 Jan 1999 09:35:46 +0530 Hu tu tu is clearly one of the masterpieces of our times! Gulzarji deserves all praise for creating this great film. Frankly, one wonders what would film lovers do without directors like him? The film raises issues that touch our lives on a day to day basis and leaves a lot of questions unanswered for our generation. Thanks to Time Films for backing his project. We look forward to any projects of Meghna in direction. Jyoti and Sukhminder
Date: Mon, 25 Jan 1999 18:29:51 +0800 Collection of random quotes. No direction. Don't allow writers like this one into your otherwise fine line-up.
Date: Mon, 25 Jan 1999 21:05:21 +0530 The film sucks to say the least!!!! How Readers responded to Saisuresh Sivaswamy's recent columns How Readers responded to Arvind Lavakare's recent columns
