Punjab shivers under a cold wave

Cold wave conditions prevailed in parts of Punjab.

Night temperatures were appreciably below normal in parts of the plains of west Uttar Pradesh, south Rajasthan, north Gujarat, Konkan and of Vidarbha, and were below normal in parts of Assam, Meghalaya and Orissa.

They were appreciably above normal in northeast Madhya Pradesh, south coastal Andhra Pradesh and in parts of Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Marathwada and of Telangana, and were above normal in parts of sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim, east Uttar Pradesh, coastal Tamil Nadu and of south interior Karnataka.

They were normal over the rest of the country outside Arunchal Pradesh and the hills of west Uttar Pradesh from where the data were sparse.

Rain or thundershowers occurred at many places in east Uttar Pradesh and at a few places in west Madhya Pradesh.

Mainly dry weather prevailed over the rest of the country.

Rain or snow is likely at isolated places in the hills of west Uttar Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir.

Rain or thundershowers are likely at isolated places in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Haryana, Punjab and Tamil Nadu.

Storm dissipates

Meanwhile, the cyclonic storm over the south-west Bay of Bengal, which lay about 600km east-south-east of Madras on Wednesday morning, rapidly weakened into a depression without any appreciable movement by afternoon as per satellite observations.

The system was expected to weaken further and move in a north-north-easterly direction, according to the weather office.

Tamil Nadu was unlikely to be adversely affected by the storm. Cloudy weather with isolated rainfall might occur in the next 24 hours, the weather office said.

Mainly dry weather will prevail over the rest of the country.
