End 'persecution': Mizo Christians

E-Mail this report to a friend

Mizoram church leaders have urged President K R Narayanan to intervene and put an end to the ''persecution'' that Christians were facing in Gujarat, Bihar, Orissa and some other parts of the country.

In a memorandum to the President, copies of which were also sent to Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Mizoram Governor A Padmanabhan, the Church leaders said that unless immediately checked, the state of affairs was bound to affect the country's unity. ''India would no longer be a safe dwelling place for the oppressed and marginalised sections of society.''

Expressing grief and concern over the destruction of their properties in some parts of the country, the Church leaders said they were ''baffled'' that in spite of repeated appeals to the prime minister and Gujarat Chief Minister Keshubhai Patel the ''persecution'' of Christians has been increasing.
