E-Mail this report to a friend

The year 1999 will be celebrated as the 'Sanskrit year', Union Human Resource Development Minister Murli Manohar Joshi has said.

Talking to the media in Ujjain yesterday, Dr Joshi said renowned Sanskrit scholars, including former chief justice Ranganath Mishra, would meet in New Delhi on February 5 to discuss various aspects of the celebration.

Dr Joshi clarified that he had no intention of making Sanskrit compulsory at the school level. In fact, the authority to classify Sanskrit as a compulsory or optional language for schools lay with the state administration, he added.
