E-Mail this report to a friend

Rajat Banerjee, assistant manager of Pathimara tea estate in Cachar district of Assam, who was abducted by extremists backed by the National Socialist Council of Nagaland on August 20, was killed in an exchange of fire between the kidnappers and the army on Saturday in North Cachar Hills district, police said in Guwahati today.

Police found Banerjee's body near Mahur on Sunday afternoon.

The official had been kidnapped by suspected extremists of a Naga organisation called Dima Halao Daoga from the garden.

This was the first killing of a tea garden official in the Surama valley where the tea industry is facing an increasing number of extremist-related attacks and extortion threats.
