Major, 9 terrorists among 13 killed in Kashmir

Alert paratrooper commandos killed nine militants, reportedly foreigners, but lost two of their men, including a major, in Chowkibal area of north Kashmir late last night.

A defence ministry spokesman in Srinagar said a group of heavily armed militants was noticed in Shamaswari range in Chowkibal area of north Kashmir late last night.

When challenged, they attacked the troops with automatic weapons and grenades.

The commandos retaliated and in the exchange of fire, which continued for several hours, nine of the infiltrators were killed. Major Sudhir Kumar and a jawan also lost their lives.

Meanwhile, terrorists killed a woman and her daughter while several people, including a police officer, were injured in a hand-grenade attack in Baramulla district today.

Official sources said unidentified terrorists entered the house of one Gul Zaman at Bandipora and fired upon the inmates with automatic weapons. While Zaman was injured, his wife and daughter were killed.

Terrorists hurled a hand grenade on a security force picket at Sopore this morning, injuring several persons including a police officer.
