Five army soldiers were gunned down by an enraged army havaldar today after he was refused leave by his boss at Jusoor in the border town of R S Pora near Jammu.

Havaldar Surinder Singh had applied for leave a few days back which was refused by his seniors. He approached his boss again yesterday with the request that his leave be granted so that he is able to visit his family. However, his request was rejected once again.

A dejected Singh returned to his barrack.

This morning he took out his service Self Loading Rifle (SLR) and sprayed bullets on his colleagues killing five of them on the spot.

Those killed were identified as Ram Singh, Rattan Singh, Roshan Lal, Rajinder Singh and Raj Singh. Havaldar Singh was later overpowered and disarmed by army soldiers accompanied by senior officers

He was later taken into custody.

The bodies of the dead soldiers were handed over to the police and an FIR was lodged.

Defence officials refused to comment on the incident.
