India is endangering regional security: Pak

E-Mail this report to a friend

Pakistan said today that India's plans for a triple-punch nuclear deterrent endangered peace in South Asia and the world.

The Defence Committee of the Cabinet, the top civilian/military body, said in a statement that the Indian nuclear doctrine was ''fraught with serious risks and dangers, not only for the security of the region but the world at large''.

The DCC, which was chaired by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharief, said Pakistan would continue to develop its nuclear weapons as a minimum nuclear deterrent against the proposed arsenal of India.

''The committee agreed that the development of Pakistan's nuclear programme will be determined solely by the requirement of our minimum deterrent capability, which is now an indispensable part of our security doctrine,'' said a senior official.

The DCC met to study plans by India to assemble land, sea and air-based weapons ready for rapid retaliation against any nuclear attack.

It urged the international community to put pressure on India to accept a ''comprehensive restraint regime'' to prevent a further arms race in South Asia.
