Flood toll in Bihar reaches 231

The flood situation in Bihar has worsened with the Gandak river inundating more than 100 villages in west Champaran district.

The toll on Thursday went up to 231. Two deaths were reported from Supaul district. A report from Bagha said the Gandak breached its embankment further at Pipra Piprasi due to torrential rains in catchment areas.

Marooned people were being shifted to nearby villages bordering Uttar Pradesh, a report said, adding that the situation aggravated following the release of water into the river from the Balmikinagar barrage.

A report from Sitamarhi said over 50 villages in the district were again submerged following heavy rains in catchment areas in Nepal.

Bagmati Project Superintendent Engineer S K Jha said the river was exerting immense pressure on its embankment at some places, and that flood-fighting measures were on in full-swing.

Cental Water Commission sources said the Bagmati river was flowing above the danger mark at Benibad and Hayaghat by 53 cm and 109 cm respectively, while the Gandak crossed the danger mark at Khadda by 35 cm.

The Burhi Gandak river was above the danger mark at Rosera and Khagaria by 24 cm and 18 cm respectively.

CWC sources said the Adhwara rivers were flowing above the danger mark at Kamtaul and Ekmighat by 15 cm and 72 cm respectively. And the Kosi crossed the danger mark at Basua, Baltara and Kursaila by 39 cm, 146 cm and 65 cm respectively.

The Mahananda was also above the danger mark at Dhengraghat and Jhaba by 33 cm and 9 cm respectively.

The local weather office said moderate to heavy rain was expected in catchment areas of all major rivers in Bihar during the next 24 hours.
