E-Mail this report to a friend

Mukhtar Ahmad in Srinagar

Seven persons, including a pro-India militant, were killed and four others wounded in a landmine explosion at Village Zirhama in the border district of Kupwara, 100km from Srinagar, in north Kashmir.

In the state capital Srinagar, one civilian was killed while five others received serious injuries when terrorists hurled a grenade near the Durga Nag temple in the high-security Sonwar precinct this afternoon.

Police said Bhushan Lal, a worker in a nearby hotel, died on the way to hospital of splinter wounds caused by the grenade explosion. Four other bystanders have been admitted in different hospitals.

No one has owned responsibility for the Kupwara incident. District police chief Mohammad Amin Shah told rediff.com on phone that seven persons who were working as porters with the army died and four others were injured when the truck in which they were travelling hit the mine.

Two of the injured, who are in a critical condition, have been shifted to Srinagar for specialised treatment.

Shah identified those killed as Shreen Khan, his son Iqbal Khan, Ghulam Mohi-ud-Din Wani, Farooq Ahmad Sheikh, Altaf Khan, Bashir Ahmad Lone and Mohammad Farooq Khan.

Shreen Khan was a pro-government militant and had been provided security by the government.

Panic has gripped Kupwara where terrorists have recently carried out a series of attacks on heavily guarded army camps.

Yesterday, four policemen were killed and nine others, including the station house officer, were wounded in a massive explosion at Chenani in Jammu region.

Police sources said terrorists fired a rocket on a border post at Village Narania in Jammu region, killing a jawan on the spot and injuring seven other soldiers.

Last night, two civilians were gunned down by terrorists at Village Chonwaliwar in Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah's constituency Ganderbal.
