ISI agents' interrogation reveals comprehensive game plan

E-Mail this report to a friend

The police have spread a dragnet in Assam and other North-Eastern states in the wake of a confessional statement made by four arrested agents of Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence.

A top police official said today that the four had admitted during interrogation that they were sent to Assam with specific assignments. ''Their first task was to make arrangements to send explosives to the state through Bangladesh for insurgent groups operating in the North-Eastern region and Jammu and Kashmir,'' he said.

The official termed as a 'big achievement' the recovery of 30 kilograms of RDX from a specified place inside Bangladesh across the West Bengal border on Saturday night by the Assam and West Bengal police, and said the consignment was meant for terrorists in Assam and Jammu and Kashmir.

The four ISI functionaries -- Mohammad Fasih Ullah Hussaini alias Khalid Mahmood of Hyderabad (Pakistan), Mohammad Javed Wakhar alias Mustaffa of Karachi, Moulana Hafiz alias Akram Mallick of Kupwara (Jammu and Kashmir) and Quari Salim Ahmed alias Abdul Asis of Muzzafarnagar (Uttar Pradesh) were arrested in Guwahati on August 7.

The official said that the ISI was using Assam as the route to enter the country taking advantage of the lax security on the state's border with Bangladesh.

The ISI activists disclosed during interrogation that they arrived at Dhaka from Pakistan and entered Assam crossing the Kuchiara river in Karimganj district of the state. ''They were also scheduled to proceed to Kashmir to intensify the terrorist activities there,'' he said.

On the basis of the interrogation, the police succeeded in apprehending several linkmen and agents.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta has congratulated the state police for the successful operation against the ISI activists. In his Independence Day speech yesterday, the chief minister urged the people to step up vigil against the ISI which wanted to destabilise the country.
