Do or die: Sonia tells partymen

E-Mail this report to a friend

Congress president Sonia Gandhi today exhorted partymen to revive the 'do or die' spirit of the Quit India Movement and save the country from the scourge of communalism and corruption.

Addressing a function to honour freedom fighters, she said there was a need for every Congressman to understand the philosophy behind Gandhiji's call of 'do or die' and take inspiration from it to face the threats from internal forces.

Setting the agenda for the election, she pledged that the Congress would provide a government with a far-sighted vision.

''The fight today is not only against our political opponents, but also against those who are supporting wrong programmes and agenda within the party,'' she said.

''We will have to stand in this fight against communalism as a principled party where morality should be our guiding force. In the present day politics, we will have to give a new meaning to public life and bring in the required change,'' she added.

Saying that the country was today fighting the same thinking and philosophy which claimed the life of the father of the nation in 1948, the Congress chief stressed that it was time to expose such forces which were gaining strength once again.

Pachmarhi resolution, she recalled, was the first step of the party towards propagating the need for bringing in honesty and purety in public life. ''Apart from concentrating on the defeat of our opponents in the forthcoming elections, we will also have to think about providing added opportunities to people to make the country self-sufficient in all spheres,'' she said.
