2 blasts rock Assam, engine derails

E-Mail this report to a friend

A special security train engine has derailed and a pylon damaged in two separate explosions masterminded by suspected United Liberation Front of Asom militants in Assam today, official sources said.

No one was injured in the blasts.

Special security engines, with a compartment, move ahead of every passenger train in the area. The 5622 North East Express was following the security train today, but was detained at Bijni station after the blast.

The engine jumped track following the explosion on a bridge between Bijni and Patiladaha stations of the North East Frontier Railway.

Train services were disrupted and some long-distance trains rescheduled. Restoration work had already started and was expected to be over by tonight. Senior railway officials were supervising the restoration work.

In another incident, a high tension power line tower was damaged in a bomb blast at Bhalaguri, about 40 kilometres from Barpeta, a district headquarter town in lower Assam.

Senior civil and police officials had rushed to the sites and launched investigation, the sources added.

As many as 275 people were killed in a collision between the Brahmaputra Mail and the Awadh-Assam Express at Gaisal in West Bengal earlier this week.
