Kalpnath Rai passes away

Former Union minister and senior Congress leader Kalpnath Rai died today following a heart attack. He was 58.

He is survived by his wife, a son and four daughters.

Rai suffered a massive heart attack last night following which he was admitted to the Ram Manohar Lohia hospital in New Delhi, where the end came at 0245 hours, family sources said.

He was the Congress general secretary during the Indira Gandhi regime and was a minister in the P V Narasimha Rao government.

He was elected to the Rajya Sabha from Uttar Pradesh in 1974. Later, he was elected to the Lok Sabha many times from Ghosi constituency of the state.

He was elected to the twelfth Lok Sabha on a Samata Party ticket but later he resigned from the party and joined the Congress.
