EC changes poll schedule

E-Mail this report to a friend

The Election Commission today came out with a new schedule for the 13th Lok Sabha elections in view of several representations for a change in the dates announced earlier.

The commission said this evening that the changes were made because the dates announced earlier were clashing with major festivals and also posing administrative and logistical problems.

As per the revised schedule, the constituencies which were to go to polls on September 4 will now vote on September 5, except Lakshadweep where polling will now be held on October 3. There is no change in the poll dates for constituencies going to polls on September 11 except Pondicherry where voting will now be held on September 5.

The constituencies earlier scheduled to vote on September 17 will now vote on September 18. The constituencies which were to vote on September 24 will now go to polls the next day. The constituencies where polling was to be held on October 1 will now go to polls on October 3, except two constituencies in Meghalaya which will now vote on September 25.

The commission announced that simultaneous assembly elections will be held in Karnataka, Sikkim, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra and Arunachal Pradesh as per the schedule for the Lok Sabha elections. Counting of votes in all constituencies will be taken up on October 6, while the poll process will be completed by October 10. Byelections to fill casual vacancies in a few assemblies will be held along with the general elections.
