Bengal Cabinet approves renaming of state, Calcutta

The West Bengal Cabinet today approved the renaming of West Bengal as Bangla and Calcutta as Kolkata as unanimously resolved in the state legislative assembly.

Briefing reporters after the Cabinet meeting in Calcutta, Information and Cultural Affairs Minister Buddhadev Bhattacharjee said the proposal to rename the capital city would be sent to the Union home ministry for approval immediately.

But the proposal to rename the state would be sent to Delhi after the parliamentary election.
