Soldier arrested for raping disturbed teenager in public

Army authorities have arrested a jawan for the shocking daylight rape of a mentally disturbed girl in full view of the public in front of the Circuit House at Kokrajhar, Assam.

The incident occurred on April 13, but was officially reported by the civil authorities only yesterday.

It occurred barely 100 metres from the district magistrate's office.

According to District Magistrate John Ingti Kathar's report, the soldier raped the 16-year-old girl in front of the Kokrajhar Circuit House and the office of the deputy inspector general of police between the broad-gauge and meter-gauge railway stations even as more than 100 people watched.

Though the incident took place in the day, none of the bystanders dared intervene as the soldier was armed. Some people did throw stones, but that failed to deter the soldier, the report said.

The soldier was identified as Ajit Singh of the 168 Field Regiment. The chief judicial magistrate has handed over the case to the army authorities for a court martial.
