Militants attacked a heavily guarded army camp at Haft Chinar, near the secretariat, in Srinagar Sunday evening.

Police sources said a group of militants fired seven rifle-grenades towards the Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry camp at around 1930 hours. Though the grenades burst inside the camp and damaged a building, no one was injured.

The militants managed to escape.

Soon after the incident, troops rushed out and rounded up half a dozen locals. Senior police officers too reached the spot. The residents of Batmallo, Dandarkhah, Shah Mohalla and Haft Chinar were subjected to identification parades.

This is the second attack on the camp at Haft Chinar. In February, militants had fired several rifle-grenades.

Officials say the militants fired from the secretariat. Government offices will shift to Srinagar, the summer capital of the troubled state, next week.

In the past, the militants have struck at the secretariat with rockets on the opening day. "But we won't allow them to strike this time. Tight security arrangements would be made around the secretariat building," a senior police officer said.
