Four militants, soldier among six killed in Jammu

Four hardcore foreign militants of banned Harkat-ul-Ansar were killed in an encounter with the army in the Kalakote area of Rajouri district last evening. Elsewhere in the region a soldier was among two persons killed in overnight operations in the past 24 hours.

Defence sources said that hearing that foreign militants were hiding in Malla Galla village in the Kalakote area, troops cordoned off the village and conducted searches. Militants fired at the search party with automatic weapons and the troops retaliated. In the encounter four foreign militants were killed, he said.

A huge cache of arms and ammunition were also recovered from the encounter site. These included three AK-56 rifles, five hand grenades, two kg of explosive, one motor bomb and some ammunition. The operation was still going on when the reports last came in. Further details were awaited, he said.

An official spokesperson said a soldier lost his life in an encounter between security forces and militants in Surrankote area of Poonch district on Sunday evening. The militants later escaped in the cover of darkness.

The spokesperson said unidentified militants also shot dead one Sakhi Mohammad at Reasi in Udhampur district on Sunday evening.
