Trinamul MP seeks privilege move against Mayawati

E-Mail this report to a friend

Trinamul Congress leader Sudip Bandyopadhyay today gave a privilege notice against Bahujan Samaj Party vice president Mayawati for allegedly ''misleading'' the Lok Sabha on the stand taken by her party on the confidence motion moved by Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

In his notice to Speaker G M C Balayogi, the Trinamul leader said while participating in the debate on the motion on April 16, Mayawati had declared that her party would abstain from voting on the motion. But the next day, she along with her party members participated in the voting. ''She wilfully and deliberately misled the House''.

The people's confidence in the democratic system had been shaken as she had taken the house by ''on a ride.'' "It was a breach of privilege. She pledged to do something on the floor of the House but did not honour her commitment. What she had done was nothing but an attack on the parliamentary democracy and the privilege of members," he added.

The Speaker should, therefore, take serious note of the alleged breach of privilege on her part and refer the matter to the committee on privileges, the Trinamul leader said.
