BJP allies stand by it

Leaders of Bharatiya Janata Party-led alliance met in New Delhi today to reaffirm their faith in the leadership of Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

The meeting, which was held at the prime minister's office in Parliament, lasted about an hour and passed a resolution expressing determination to work together under Vajpayee's leadership, sources said.

The leaders resolved to strengthen democracy in the country and asserted that only a coalition with a proven majority could be asked to form the next government.

Those who attended the meeting included Home Minister L K Advani, Information and Broadcasting Minister Pramod Mahajan, Y Gopalasamy (MDMK), Ramdoss (PMK), Surjeet Singh Barnala (Akali Dal), Naveen Patnaik (BJD), Yerram Naidu (TDP) and a representative from the Indian National Lok Dal, besides Anand Mohan Singh (RJP). Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah, who is also president of the National Conference, Murasoli Maran (DMK) and Surinder Singh (HVP) contacted Vajpayee expressing their solidarity with him, the sources said.
